MAY

Merry, rollicking, frolicking May
Into the woods came skipping one day;
She teased the brook till he laughed outright,
And gurgled and scolded with all his might;

She chirped to the birds and bade them sing
A chorus of welcome to Lady Spring;
And the bees and butterflies she set
To waking the flowers that were sleeping yet.

She shook the trees till the buds looked out
To see what the trouble was all about,
And nothing in Nature escaped that day
The touch of life-giving, bright young May.

George MacDonald (1824-1905).

METAMORPHOSES.
Change one given word to another given word by altering one letter at a time, each alteration making a new word, the number of letters being always the same, and the letters always in the same order. Example: Change lamp to fire in 4 moves. LAMP: LAME, FAME, FARE, FIRE. Now you try some: Change 1. NOSE to LIPS in 4 moves. 2. ROSE to LILY in 5 moves. 3. THIS to THAT in 3 moves.

PLANTING AN AVOCADO SEED.
1. Clean & soak an avocado pit in a glass of water for a day or two. 2. Remove the brown skin. 3. Place 4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit so the bottom can be placed into a glass of water pointy end up. Place it in a glass. 4. Within 2 weeks the pit will begin to split & a root will come out of the bottom. 5. Now, it is time to plant your tree-to-be in a large container filled with potting soil. 6. Plant it in the middle and cover with an inch of soil. 7. Water and place in a sunny spot. 8. The plant will grow toward the sun so if you want it to be straight, you will have to rotate it every week. 9. Water regularly and feed with plant food every 2-3 weeks. 10. With luck, your plant will develop into an avocado tree.

GROWING A SWEET POTATO VINE.
1. Place 4 toothpicks around the middle of the sweet potato and place it in a jar of water so the bottom is submerged. 2. Place the jar in a light but not sunny place. 3. Change the water every few days. 4. In a week or two, sprouts will appear and it will start to grow leaves. 5. in a month, it can be planted in a pot filled with soil. 6. Keep the pot in a light place. 7. Water twice a week.
